Four months after the new runway collections made a case for all we should expect in the new year, the 2023 fashion trends have started making their way into the stores. What should we be buying?

Slouchy, oversized blazers were all the rage at Valentino and even Chanel opted for relaxed-fit versions of its trademark bouclé jackets in playful pinks. If you're a die-hard sharp tailoring gal, luckily Victoria Beckham came through with simple tailored blazers that acted as mini dresses.

The ’80s shoulder pads are making a comeback this season, too and we’re excited about it. This trend is exaggerated, sure, but it creates an over-the-top silhouette that is futuristic and artsy. Most commonly seen in blazers, this style creates the appearance of enormous shoulders, which in turn, alludes to a tiny waist.

2. Mini dresses

Mini dresses are back and at the SS23 iterations are all about texture. Pearl embellishments at Givenchy and belted LBDs at Chanel provided a certain opulence. This quirly dress can easily be given a city edge with a pair of platform boots, sporty sunglasses and a worn-out leather bag. T-shirt and dress or sweater and dress - what not? We don't have to talk about the summer, short dresses suit every body shape and every height.

No matter the occasion or season, there are always plenty of opportunities to wear a dress and, of course, an overwhelming amount of options from which to pick.

3. Lace

Lace was out in full force, with many designers favouring sweeping maxis with cool cutwork. Blue lingerie-inspired pieces were showcased at Burberry's belated London Fashion Week show whereas both Dior and Versace oozed gothic glamour. Seen in a rainbow of colors, from classic white to bold and punchy pinks and blues, thanks to the detailing, this style automatically lends itself more to evening and occasionwear.

4. Thigh-high splits

Slip dresses have been trending for a couple of years now, and 2023 will be no different. Silky slip dresses at Givenchy, colourful florals at Dries Van Noten, and glossy midis at Prada are paving the way to be the biggest hit in 2023.

When it comes to this undergarment-like dress, layering is key. In the colder months, you can rock a slip dress with a chunky knit or a casual sweatshirt. To transition to spring, pair it with t-shirts or turtlenecks layered underneath. In the warmer months, you can wear a slip dress on its own, as it's one of those easy breezy pieces you can put on and immediately look dressed up.

5. Cut-out dresses

Cut-outs are having a major moment, and British trailblazer Poster Girl has been leading the way with its stretchy geometric designs. However, next season we're loving larger proportioned cut-outs, looking at the likes of Andreadamo, Valentino and A.W.A.K.E for inspiration.

Rather than the traditional torso-based cut-outs that we’re used to seeing, expect to try a silhouette with skin showing on the side of your frame, underboob and rib cage, or the entire side of your body. To take the look from day to night, swap out a pair of chunky boots or sneakers for sky-high heels or sandals, and put your hair in a slicked-back bun for an elegant feel.

6. Blue 

Yess, we love a bright cerulean blue as a contrast to the sickly sweet Barbiecore pink trend. The strongest color story to come out of 2023. runways so far, cobalt blue has burst through the collections with the freshness of a sea mist on a morning day. Just bright enough to warrant a double take, yet subtle enough to be worked into daily wear, it's the type of deep blue that will excite even the most color-averse.   It feels a little bit more sophisticated, works year-round, and fits snugly into my nearly all-black wardrobe.

Icy hues in silky fabrics signaled a more subtle and elegant take on partywear. Delicate silver embellishments, such as fine beadwork effortlessly pair with the pastel blue tone for a dressed-up finish.

7. Animal print

Animal prints are extremely versatile because of their interestingly dynamic patterns and are all-season-approved when paired well with the right balance. Animal prints can be worn in a variety of ways and on a variety of different items of clothing.

Zebra and tiger prints are two more wonderful alternatives to the traditional leopard print. Both of these patterns can be paired with classic hues or something unique, like monochrome shades.

Padlocks and keys are the micro-trend to know in this field, kicked off by Givenchy when Matthew Williams took over in AW20, and championed by Dua Lipa this festive period.

Channel your inner Grace Jones and raise the stakes by opting for a striking hooded gown, taking your cues from Saint Laurent, Alaïa and Valentino.

To make this trend work for evening wear select slinky, silk jersey style dresses that have cowl necklines and pooling, draped hoods. Elegant and striking this bold look is ideal for those looking for a new twist to black tie dressing. For a casual take on the trend opt for sportier iterations that include knitted and jersey styles that can be worn with leggings and sneakers. 

In a strange way, he always looks grumpy in the steamy hoods dresses.

10. Silver metallics
